The independent watchmaking landscape is undergoing a profound philosophical shift. For years, microbrand success was measured almost exclusively by case proportions, dial execution, and baseline mechanical value. Today, a new generation of collectors demands transparent, responsible manufacturing.

Following their successful 2023 modular debut—which was highly celebrated and shipped to enthusiasts across 18 countries—the Italian team at LIBERUM Watches became acutely aware of the heavy environmental footprint behind traditional watchmaking.

Traditional stainless steel manufacturing is an energy-intensive bottleneck, requiring raw metals to be melted at temperatures exceeding 1500°C and emitting roughly 6 to 7 kg of CO₂ for every single kilogram of steel produced.

Combined with the habitat loss and natural landscape alteration caused by mining iron, nickel, and chromium, the team asked a vital question: could high-end horology be executed sustainably? Their answer is the LIBERUM® RE-XHAUST Watch, a timepiece built by prioritizing the ethics of its material origins before a single aesthetic choice was made.
From Track Scraps to Solar Steel
Instead of relying on newly extracted ore, the design philosophy behind the RE-XHAUST centers on circular design and creative upcycling. LIBERUM sourced high-performance technical steel harvested from industrial exhaust systems.

Originally engineered to withstand extreme thermal fluctuations, immense atmospheric pressures, and punishing mechanical vibrations, this robust alloy possesses the ideal structural integrity for a rugged tool watch case.
To bypass the fossil-fuel-heavy footprint of traditional smelting, this salvaged steel is remelted entirely in a state-of-the-art, solar-powered furnace in collaboration with green energy suppliers. This ingenious upcycling process transforms industrial offcuts into a pristine, medical-grade 316L alloy (specifically grade 1.4441 Recycled Solar Steel).

The resulting case metal holds an authentic, mechanical history long before it ever meets a milling machine, delivering uncompromised structural performance without the environmental toll.
Italian Craftsmanship and Considered Proportions
On the wrist, the LIBERUM® RE-XHAUST demonstrates that sustainable horology doesn’t require sacrificing classical proportions or sophisticated case finishing. Machined from solid solar steel using high-precision CNC technology, the watch is entirely produced, hand-finished, and assembled in Italy.

The dimensions are practically tailor-made for the modern watch enthusiast, boasting a highly versatile 38mm case diameter, a compact 46mm lug-to-lug span, and a remarkably slim total thickness of just 9.5mm including the crystal.

The case architecture utilizes clean, slab-sided flanks balanced by a simple, sharply brushed bezel. The entirely brushed finish gives the watch an understated, utilitarian aesthetic that conforms beautifully to a variety of wrist sizes, making it an incredibly comfortable daily companion.
Translucent Dial Architecture
The design narrative deepens when looking through the flat, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The dial is crafted from a smoky, semi-transparent sapphire disk with painted fume accents, offering an architectural look into the underlying mechanics.

All time-tracking parameters are crisply printed in white directly onto the smoked surface, accompanied by a racing-inspired outer track. For low-light readability, the simple baton hands and interval markers are treated with high-performance Super-LumiNova BGW9, casting a brilliant blue glow.

Driving the hands is the universally trusted, high-beat Miyota 9015 automatic movement, enhanced by LIBERUM with custom laser processing. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this slim Japanese engine is highly regarded for its durability and ease of servicing.

Anchored by a 316L stainless steel screw-down crown and matching case back, the watch delivers a robust 100 meters of water resistance. Ultimately, the LIBERUM® RE-XHAUST is far more than a sustainable gimmick; it is an incredibly thoughtful, well-proportioned daily wearer built to become a lasting part of your identity.
