Shadows and Sapphire: The Studio Underd0g 02SERIES Nightshade

The vintage field watch revival shows no signs of slowing down, but it has historically suffered from a lack of genuine design variety. For decades, the military-spec “Dirty Dozen” blueprint has dictated sterile black dials, stark white Arabic numerals, and a somber, strictly utilitarian approach to timekeeping.

While those historical codes are objectively brilliant, British independent watchmaker Studio Underd0g has made it their mission to inject the segment with a heavy dose of playful irreverence. With the launch of their highly anticipated second-generation field collection, the brand has proven they can respect horological history while completely subverting it.

Standing out as the moodiest and most visually sophisticated member of the new lineup is the Studio Underd0g 02SERIES Nightshade. Retailing for £875, this time-only field watch tips its hat to the battle-tested layouts of the mid-20th century, but presents them as if the dial had beautifully aged, blued, and matured through decades of unique exposure.

It delivers a rich vintage soul, completely free of the terrifying servicing bills associated with true antique ownership.

A Multilayered Floating Masterclass

What immediately sets the Nightshade apart from any conventional field watch is its incredibly complex, multi-layer dial architecture. Studio Underd0g has eschewed a flat brass canvas, opting instead for a structural approach that relies heavily on light to do the heavy lifting.

* Case Geometry: 37.5mm Diameter x 11.5mm Thickness (9.4mm excluding crystal)
* Upper Dial Element: 1mm thick tinted sapphire crystal disc
* Base Dial Element: Brass plate with a vibrant silver sunray finish
* Illumination Profile: X1 Grade Super-LumiNova filled numerals and hands

Suspended exactly 1mm above a silver sunray base plate sits a custom-cut, tinted sapphire disc. This top layer houses the branding, the red-accented railway minute track, and the bold Arabic numerals.

Because these two layers are meticulously pinned together by hand in the workshop, the upper printing appears to float seamlessly in mid-air. When you tilt the watch toward a light source, the numerals cast soft, shifting shadows onto the sunray metal beneath, ensuring the display never quite settles into a static pattern.

It is an intricate, deeply considered layout that elevates the watch into a genuine piece of wrist sculpture.

Weekend-Proof Mechanical Autonomy

Purists will be delighted to know that despite the ultra-modern dial execution, the heart of the Nightshade remains fiercely traditional.

For the Gen2 iteration, Studio Underd0g has swapped out the older movement for Sellita’s upgraded, manual-winding SW200-2 M caliber.

“By choosing a factory manual-wind system, the watch completely dispenses with an automatic winding rotor, keeping the case back slim and retaining the engaging, tactile daily ritual of winding your watch by hand.”

Technical AttributeSpecification
Movement CalibreSwiss Sellita Manual Winding SW200-2 M
Frequency Rate28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz)
Power Reserve63 Hours (Upgraded from 42 Hours)
Daily AccuracyHighly regulated at -7 to +7 seconds per day
Water Resistance10 ATM (100 Meters / 330 Feet)

The real victory for the end consumer lies in the movement’s upgraded mainspring barrel. The power reserve has been pushed from a standard 42 hours to a robust 63 hours.

This means you can wind the watch up on Friday afternoon, set it down for a weekend of off-grid relaxation, and pick it up on Monday morning with the hacking seconds still keeping perfect time.

True British Assembly

The structural upgrades for Gen2 extend cleanly into the physical case metrics. The brushed 316L stainless steel case has been slightly tuned to a highly wearable 37.5mm diameter, while the total thickness has been carved down to just 11.5mm (inclusive of the double-domed sapphire crystal).

Every single piece in the collection is hand-assembled in-house in Great Britain. This isn’t a watch passed down an impersonal assembly line; a single watchmaker builds each timepiece from start to finish.

To emphasize this human touch, the individual watchmaker signs their initials directly onto the official warranty paperwork included in the box.

Fitted to a beautiful Burgundy Gaucho leather strap custom-crafted by The Strap Tailor, the £875 Studio Underd0g 02SERIES Nightshade is a stunning, beautifully executed reminder that serious watchmaking can still be exceptionally fun.
