For three decades, French manufacture Bell & Ross has built an indelible reputation upon translating cockpit instrumentation into utilitarian wristwatches. Their signature “circle in a square” aesthetic, pioneered by the iconic BR-01 and refined in the modern BR-03, has conquered cockpits, dive vessels, and military runways.
Yet occasionally, the brand ventures beyond strict utilitarian parameters into imaginative conceptual territory. The latest manifestation of this cosmic curiosity is the Bell & Ross BR-03 Astro, a poetically re-engineered pilot watch that swaps airspeed indicators for planetary motion.

Priced at £4,990 and strictly limited to 999 pieces worldwide, the BR-03 Astro pays homage to the blue planet, turning conventional three-hand timekeeping into an animated celestial orrery.
An Orbital Orrery: Aventurine & Planetary Indications
Rather than traditional hands sweeping across a stamped instrument dial, the BR-03 Astro reimagines the dial as a window looking out from the International Space Station. Serving as the cosmic canvas is a shimmering plate of deep blue aventurine glass, whose natural metallic inclusions evoke the endless expanse of the Milky Way.

At the very centre of the dial sits Earth, rendered in striking three-dimensional relief through a precision intaglio engraving process carved into the underside of the anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

Orbiting this central globe are three distinctive celestial bodies replacing conventional hands:
- The Satellite (Seconds): A laser-engraved metal satellite sweeps the perimeter once every sixty seconds, tracking the energetic passage of time like a spacecraft in low-Earth orbit.
- The Moon (Minutes): Serving as the minute indicator, the Moon is crafted from laser-engraved metal, detailed with realistic lunar craters and mare.
- Mars (Hours): Reimagining the traditional “mystery dial” technique, Mars is illustrated on a rotating transparent sapphire disc, tracing a silent, crimson orbit around the dial once every twelve hours.
As Creative Director and co-founder Bruno Belamich observes, the magic lies in offering a dreamlike dimension—inviting wearers to contemplate deep-space exploration rather than mere seconds and minutes.
Micro-Blasted Black Ceramic & Architectural Depth
Encasing this planetary ballet is the contemporary 41mm BR-03 silhouette, measuring 11.50mm in thickness.

Crafted from lightweight, scratch-proof black ceramic, the case features a matte micro-blasted finish that absorbs light, echoing the pitch-black void of space while maintaining Bell & Ross’s unmistakable military instrument geometry.

Engineering the dial required overcoming significant mechanical hurdles. The top sapphire crystal is specially hollowed out from beneath to provide vertical clearance for the domed Earth relief, lending the display remarkable architectural depth.

Despite its avant-garde kinetic display, the watch retains genuine tool-watch utility with a 100-metre water resistance rating and a secure screw-down crown.
Calibre BR-CAL.327 & Complete Specifications
Powering these concentric planetary discs is the self-winding calibre BR-CAL.327. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), the automatic movement delivers an upgraded 54-hour power reserve.

Bell & Ross’s watchmakers meticulously calculated the mass distribution of the engraved metal hands and transparent sapphire discs to ensure flawless chronometric accuracy without placing undue drag on the escapement.
