A Shift in Perception: The SLOMO Glance Watch

The independent microbrand landscape can often feel like a repeating loop of historical revivals, skin divers, and familiar field watch templates. It takes true creative courage to look at a traditional dial layout and ask: Does this actually make logical sense?

Enter SLOMO, a Toronto-based design studio that has set out to reshape our cognitive relationship with the passing hours. Their debut piece, the SLOMO Glance Watch, strips away the sterile exactness of traditional timekeeping in favor of a calmer, more intuitive philosophy.

It isn’t just an exercise in abstract design; it’s a beautifully resolved tool watch built around the simple idea of reclaiming the day, zone by zone.

The Architecture of an Intuitive Dial

The core philosophy of the Glance lies in its approach to spatial legibility. Rather than pinning numbers to strict, isolated indices, the watch utilizes “offset numerals.”

Here, the Arabic numerals are shifted slightly so they sit dead-center within the 30-degree “pie slice” that each hour occupies. The logic is beautifully straightforward: when the hour hand is traveling anywhere within that designated quadrant, the hour is immediately obvious.

To prevent anything from disrupting this seamless tracking, SLOMO engineered custom “clear-view” hands. The baton-style hour and minute hands feature partially skeletonized windows at their tips, ensuring they frame rather than block the raised BGW9 3D lume blocks beneath them.

The result is an architectural layout packed with depth, providing instantaneous readouts on the wrist without forcing your brain to calculate the hands’ relational distances to standard ticks.

Kinetic Serenity in Motion

A traditional running seconds hand acts as a frantic, constant reminder of time slipping away. To counteract this stress, the center pinion features one of the watch’s most clever graphic integrations: the “Slo-Motion Logo.”

“Replacing a standard second sweep is a small rotating disk featuring the brand’s stylized, elongated ‘O.’ Because of its minimal radius, the logo appears to spin in slow motion, aligning seamlessly with the printed dial artwork twice every minute (at the zero and 30-second marks).”

It injects necessary kinetic energy into the mechanical movement, confirming the watch is alive, while removing the aggressive distraction of a sweeping needle. It’s a subtle detail, but one that encourages you to slow down and appreciate the micro-mechanics at play.

On the Wrist: Case and Capabilities

Physically, the Glance delivers an exceptionally well-proportioned and comfortable footprint that punches well over its weight class.

Machined from fully brushed 316L stainless steel, the case measures a sweet-spot 39mm in diameter, with a slim 9.5mm thickness that reaches 11mm once you account for the magnificent double-domed sapphire crystal equipped with an anti-reflective coating.

The case is given a futuristic, industrial touch via hollowed-out lugs and shallow milled grooves along the case sides, echoing the oblong shape of the center logo.

Under the hood sits the Miyota 9039, a premium, ultra-thin Japanese automatic workhorse running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 42-hour power reserve. This means zero ghost-date crown positions and a buttery-smooth hand wind.

The watch comes paired with a matching stainless steel O-link bracelet featuring integrated quick-release spring bars and a highly coveted on-the-fly micro-adjustable clasp.

Priced at £625, the SLOMO Glance Watch avoids the trap of over-complicating a novelty or relying on cheap retro nostalgia.

Instead, it serves up a genuinely original, design-forward daily driver that challenges how we read time by encouraging us to enjoy the moment.
