Volcanic Terrain Meets Microbrand Elegance: Baltic Hermétique The Rift

Parisian microbrand Baltic has continually redefined accessible field and tool watch design through thoughtfully executed vintage aesthetics and robust mechanical platforms.

For the 7th edition of The Rift—the gruelling 200-kilometre gravel cycling race spanning Iceland’s unforgiving volcanic trails along the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates—Baltic stepped in as Official Timekeeper.

To mark the occasion, the brand launched the Baltic Hermétique The Rift, an organic, luminescent tool watch built for extreme terrain.

Priced at an accessible £525, this limited-edition release brings a fresh, nature-inspired palette and dual-casing options to Baltic’s celebrated Hermétique collection.

Dual Proportions & Architectural Utility

Recognising that modern field watches must accommodate varying wrist sizes and functional preferences, Baltic offers The Rift edition in two distinct case diameters: a vintage-proportioned 34mm (42.5mm lug-to-lug) and a classic 37mm (46mm lug-to-lug).

Crafted from fully brushed 316L stainless steel with a subtle polished bezel ring for added sophistication, the case measures a remarkably slender 10.8mm thick—or just 8.3mm excluding the double-domed sapphire crystal.

Both variants retain the collection’s signature integrated crown, recessed neatly into the case flank at 3 o’clock.

This flush placement eliminates wrist bite during intense activity—whether gripping handlebars across Icelandic gravel or navigating daily life—making it equally comfortable on either wrist.

Backed by a screw-down construction delivering a robust 150 metres (15 ATM) of water resistance, the Hermétique remains a true go-anywhere tool watch.

Forged Carbon & High-Octane Lume Geometry

The dial of The Rift takes its artistic cues directly from Iceland’s dramatic landscape, combining volcanic black, moss green, and glacial blue tones.

At its heart lies a luminescent matte white central sector framed by polished steel blades and an outer railway sector constructed from real forged carbon.

“By pairing an organic forged carbon railway sector with 0.5mm 3D Super-LumiNova blocks, Baltic transforms a £525 field watch into a high-visibility instrument made for Iceland’s most brutal trails.”

Legibility in low-light conditions is elevated to extreme levels. The dial features raised 0.5mm-thick 3D hour appliques crafted from a high-potency combination of Super-LumiNova® BGW9 and C3.

Overlapping the forged carbon outer ring and the central white sector, these luminescent blocks provide striking visual depth.

Polished steel syringe hands filled with blue-emitting BGW9 complete the display, ensuring instant readability in pitch-black terrain.

Japanese Mechanical Heart & Gravel Race Heritage

Beating inside both the 34mm and 37mm cases is the automatic Miyota 9039 movement.

Operating at a high-beat 28,800 BPH (4Hz), this reliable Japanese calibre features a slim profile that enables the watch’s 10.8mm height, delivering a dependable 42-hour power reserve.

Demonstrating the depth of the collaboration, Baltic also partnered with cycling heavyweights Specialized (creating a custom hand-painted Diverge gravel bike) and Isadore for a matching cycling kit.
