Subatomic Chronometry: URWERK UR-300 Time Quantum Watch

For nearly three decades, independent horological pioneers URWERK—steered by master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei—have redefined how we visualise the passage of time.

From orbital satellite carousels to the explosive retrograde snap that defined the Harry Winston Opus V and the UR-150 Scorpion, the Geneva atelier has continually looked to the cosmos for inspiration.

With their latest creation, however, the brand inverts its lens, trading deep-space telescopes for quantum mechanics with the URWERK UR-300 Time Quantum Watch.

Priced at CHF 168,000 (excluding taxes), this release translates subatomic particle entanglement, energy states, and mechanical Wirkungsquantum into an extraordinary piece of kinetic horology.

The T-Frame Architecture & Instantaneous Forward Jump

At the core of the UR-300 lies a radical rethink of URWERK’s wandering hour complication.

The traditional rotating carousel has been superseded by a patent-pending modular planetary complication configured as a perpendicular “T-frame” (T for Time). Comprising two linear, double-ended modules, the frame carries four tri-sided hour prisms that collectively display all twelve hours.

The prism at the base of the T acts as the active hour indicator, traversing a 108-degree arc calibrated with minutes from 0 to 60. While previous URWERK creations relied on high-tension springs that snapped back along a track, the UR-300 executes a rapid forward jump.

The moment the base reaches the 60-minute mark, the entire mechanical system changes state instantaneously. The T-frame leaps forward and rotates 72 degrees. Simultaneously, the previous crossbar pivots around its midpoint to become the new stem, aligning with the 0-minute mark, while the former stem rotates into the crossbar position.

As this architectural swap occurs, the prisms spin on their axes to display the subsequent hour. It is a striking visual metaphor for an atomic reaction: matter and energy reconfiguring in the blink of an eye.

Microengineering at the Edge of Mechanical Flux

Translating subatomic physics into micro-mechanics presented immense technical hurdles. Unlike delicate retrograde needles, the UR-300’s jumping assembly involves substantial, high-inertia components with multiple points of mechanical vulnerability.

The kinetic jump requires an enormous burst of accumulated power—harnessed from a double mainspring barrel—which must be released with microscopic precision. The impulse must be powerful enough to rotate the multi-axis T-frame instantly, yet carefully dampened to eliminate recoil or destructive mechanical shock.

Furthermore, URWERK’s engineers integrated dedicated safeguards into the geartrain, ensuring that wearers can safely adjust the time both forwards and backwards without jeopardising the delicate planetary modules.

Calibre UR-30.01V & Dual Flow Turbines

Driving this mechanical particle accelerator is the automatic Calibre UR-30.01V, beating at 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) with a 44-hour power reserve.

Winding efficiency is pneumatically regulated by URWERK’s patented Dual Flow Turbines, visible through the exhibition back alongside seconds displayed across three 20-second sectors.
