VAER C3 Tradition Field Watch: Solar-Powered Heritage

The VAER C3 Tradition Field Watch (£299) offers a compelling blend of classic design, modern technology, and robust functionality. Taking inspiration from iconic mid-20th-century explorers’ watches, particularly the Rolex Explorer references of the 1950s and 60s, VAER has created a timepiece that’s both stylish and practical for the modern adventurer. This C3 model distinguishes itself with its solar-powered movement, ocean-ready functionality, low-profile case, and full USA assembly.

The transition to solar power is a significant move, and VAER has embraced it wholeheartedly. They believe that solar movements offer the best of both worlds: the perpetual timekeeping of quartz with exceptional accuracy. A mere six hours of sunlight provides an impressive six months of power reserve, and the watch can even be charged by candlelight, making it a truly versatile and reliable timekeeping companion.

The Tradition design, a mainstay in the VAER lineup since 2020, has become a bestseller thanks to its timeless 3, 6, 9 dial arrangement. This layout, a direct homage to vintage Explorer watches, offers a clean and highly legible display. This classic design is paired with modern durability, making the C3 Tradition equally at home in urban environments and the great outdoors.

The 36mm case, crafted from 316L stainless steel, offers a comfortable and vintage-inspired presence on the wrist. This size is particularly well-suited for those with smaller wrists or those who appreciate the more understated aesthetic of vintage timepieces. The case features a 10ATM (100m) water resistance rating, a locking screw-down crown, and a single domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, ensuring robust protection against the elements and everyday wear. The 43mm lug-to-lug distance and 9.4mm thickness contribute to the watch’s comfortable and balanced proportions.

The dial and hands of the C3 Tradition Field Watch further enhance its vintage appeal. The dial features 15 layers of Old Radium lume, providing a warm, vintage-inspired glow in low-light conditions. The hour, minute, and second hands are also treated with Old Radium lume, ensuring consistent legibility. While VAER rates the lume performance a 6/10, the vintage aesthetic it provides is undeniable.

At the heart of the C3 Tradition lies a Japan-made Epson VS-22 solar-powered movement. This movement offers exceptional accuracy, with a timing tolerance of -10/+20 seconds per month. The fact that the watch is assembled in the United States adds another layer of value and craftsmanship. The VAER C3 Tradition Field Watch is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic design combined with modern technology. It’s a reliable, stylish, and versatile timepiece, perfect for those who appreciate heritage and practicality.
