From humble sea urchin to coveted delicacy, “uni” has ascended the culinary ladder, captivating palates with its briny sweetness and distinct umami. This unique flavour profile, often enjoyed in gunkan-maki sushi, has now inspired the latest creation from MING: the 37.09 Uni. Following the success of the GPHG award-winning 37.09 Bluefin, MING once again draws inspiration from the ocean’s depths, this time focusing on the resilient and intriguing sea urchin.

The sea urchin, encased in a formidable black shell and protected by toxic spines, guards its delicate orange interior with unwavering tenacity. These creatures, found in diverse marine environments from shallow waters to the crushing depths of the hadalpelagic zone, embody resilience and adaptability. It is this very essence that MING has sought to capture in the 37.09 Uni.

The watch itself is a robust, black DLC-armored dive watch punctuated by vibrant orange accents, echoing the sea urchin’s distinctive appearance. The 38mm DLC-coated case, meticulously engineered for pressure balancing, ensures water resistance to an impressive 600m, further emphasizing its deep-diving capabilities. A sapphire caseback offers a glimpse into the meticulously finished movement within.

Mirroring the functionality of the Bluefin, the Uni features a rotating sapphire timing dial operable underwater, a testament to MING’s commitment to practical design. A key differentiator lies in the newly designed hour indices and the generous application of Super-LumiNova on the dial, top crystal, and hands. Notably, the 37.09 Uni Watch is the first MING timepiece to feature orange emission Super-LumiNova, a direct nod to the sea urchin’s vibrant colour.

At the heart of the 37.09 Uni beats an automatic Sellita for MING SW300.M1 movement, showcasing a unique finish with anthracite skeletonized bridges and a rotor adorned with contrasting circular brushing. This reliable movement offers approximately 50 hours of power reserve and features hacking seconds for precise time setting.

The watch is presented on a new moulded FKM rubber strap with curved bars, quick release functionality, and a “flying blade” tuck buckle with micro-adjustment for optimal comfort and security. The MING 37.09 Uni, priced at CHF 5250, is more than just a dive watch; it’s a testament to the captivating beauty and resilient spirit of the sea urchin, translated into a horological masterpiece.
