Luminous Nordic Tooling: Straum Expedition White Lume

Oslo-based independent brand Straum has earned a dedicated following among horological purists by merging stark Scandinavian minimalism with deeply considered wilderness utility.

The Straum Expedition White Lume pushes that design philosophy directly into extreme field territory.

Priced at £2070 on its integrated titanium bracelet, this Swiss-made tool watch balances advanced metallurgy, hyper-legibility, and independent horological refinement.

Hardened Grade 5 Titanium Architecture

At the heart of the Expedition is a meticulously proportioned Grade 5 titanium case measuring 38.2mm across the bead-blasted bezel, with a wrist-friendly lug-to-lug length of 45.7mm and a slim profile of just 11mm (10.3mm excluding the double-domed sapphire crystal).

Grade 5 titanium—hardened and bead-blasted for enhanced scratch resistance and an understated tactile finish—keeps the watch head down to an ultra-lightweight ~50g (~101g on the full bracelet).

The case architecture features broader flank profiles designed to deflect impact away from the sapphire crystal, alongside a stepped bezel that minimises surface exposure on the watch’s highest plane.

Engineered with Arctic exploration in mind, the enlarged screw-down crown is deeply knurled for effortless operation with cold or gloved hands. Unscrewing the crown reveals a vibrant Fluor Orange security ring—a subtle, potentially critical visual indicator ensuring water resistance (rated to 10 ATM / 100m) is never accidentally compromised.

The Inverted Luminous Display

While traditional field watches rely on luminous indices set against a dark dial plate, the White Lume completely inverts this polarity. The entire dial surface is constructed from a foil sheet coated in high-performance BGW9 Grade A Super-LumiNova.

By daylight, it reads as a crisp, chalk-white dial contrasted against matte black PVD-coated applied hour markers and bold Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. Come nightfall, the display swaps polarity entirely: the entire dial face illuminates with an intense, steady glow, turning the diamond-cut black hands and applied markers into stark, instantly legible silhouettes.

A segmented minute hand allows at-a-glance orientation, while the black PVD central second hand features a luminous dot and a bent tip in high-visibility Fluor Orange that matches the 6 o’clock date display text.

La Joux-Perret Calibre & Quick-Release Integration

Ticking behind a closed screw-down titanium caseback—etched with an illustration of a lone hiker beneath a starry night sky—sits the manufacture La Joux-Perret G100 automatic movement.

Operating at 28,800 vph (4Hz) across 24 jewels, the G100 provides a modern 68-hour power reserve and is regulated in-house by Straum to an impressive ±7 seconds per day.

“By inverting dial polarity with full-face BGW9 lume and encasing it in hardened Grade 5 titanium, Straum delivers a masterclass in modern Nordic tool watch design.”

Fitted to the watch is an integrated Grade 5 titanium bracelet equipped with the proprietary “Straum Coupling”—a push-button quick-release mechanism housed directly inside the midlink for instant, tool-free strap swapping.
