In the relentless pursuit of horological distinction, few brands today challenge the established canon with the elegant audacity of MING. Their previous foray into the sports watch arena, the GPHG-winning 37.09 Bluefin, was celebrated not just for its robust performance but for its successful subversion of the traditional dive watch template. It was a clear statement: utility need not be aesthetically compromised.

Now, MING returns to this celebrated architecture, channeling the concept of global exploration into their latest creation, the 37.11 Odyssey, priced from CHF 4,950 on a rubber strap. This is a watch engineered for the traveller and the polymath, blending the rugged durability of a diver with the essential functionality of a true GMT companion.

The fundamental genius of the Odyssey lies in its weight—or, rather, its lack thereof. Crafted from pure Grade 2 titanium with a pragmatic brushed finish, the watch head tips the scales at a scarcely believable 42.5 grams. Paired with either a matching titanium bracelet or the brand’s groundbreaking MING Polymesh, this 38mm diameter, 12.6mm thick watch is designed to be an entirely unobtrusive accomplice on any odyssey, from traversing continents to crossing the English Channel. Crucially, it inherits the pressure-balanced case architecture of the Bluefin, ensuring its 300m water resistance remains utterly dependable.

While the case provides the robustness, the dial delivers the spectacle. MING has retained the innovative, rotating dial system that gave the Bluefin its dramatic visual prominence while preserving the compact 38mm wearability.

For the GMT function, the smoked sapphire dial is now bidirectional with 24 precise clicks, aligning a third timezone via the dedicated crown at 4 o’clock—a crown that has been further tuned for an improved tactile feel and remains operational underwater, a quintessential MING touch of overkill.

The 24-hour markings glow with a luminous colour-coding system: electric blue for the day, warm orange for the night, providing immediate, intuitive legibility. This visual feast is layered with the brand’s signature luminous hour indices in MING Polar White, etched onto the underside of the top sapphire crystal.

Powering this refined instrument is the Sellita for MING SW330.M2 automatic movement, visible beneath the smoked sapphire and further customized with an anthracite skeletonized mainplate, bridges, and rotor, a sophisticated technical flourish often reserved for far more expensive pieces.

The hands, a newly designed set, feature a first for the brand: a striking gradient luminous treatment, ensuring the watch not only functions brilliantly in the dark but positively demands to be seen in low-light conditions. With its subtle GMT complexity and supreme titanium lightness, the 37.11 Odyssey is less a watch and more a statement on the potential for elegance within the realm of the hardcore tool watch.
