In the upper echelons of independent watchmaking, the traditional rulebook is frequently tossed aside in favor of pure, unadulterated mechanical expression. Few brands embody this rebellious, avant-garde spirit quite like Hautlence. Since 2004, the Neuchâtel-based indie has made it its mission to challenge how we perceive and interact with time.

Now, they are pushing the boundaries of sculptural horology even further. Enter HAUTLENCE The Kubera Watch. Priced at CHF 35,600, the Kubera Series 1 is far more than a simple timekeeper; it is a profound manifesto of form, structure, and architectural design that transforms time into a tactile, dynamic experience.
A Masterclass in Cubist Form
Named after the Hindu god of wealth and the guardian of hidden earthly treasures, the Kubera Series 1 reflects its namesake through layered textures and mineral-like depth. Hautlence drew heavy inspiration from Cubism and its famously fragmented vision of reality. Instead of a traditional round case, the watch is housed in a strikingly vertical, rectangular stainless steel chassis measuring 36.0mm wide, 43.8mm long, and 11.3mm thick.

Built like a monolithic sculpture, the case features a tiered, layered construction that plays brilliantly with ambient light. The alternating satin-finished surfaces and sharply polished angles give the watch a three-dimensional presence that feels carved directly from a single block of steel rather than assembled.

This architectural philosophy extends seamlessly into the integrated steel bracelet. Boasting a cascading, lugless design, the bracelet wraps around the wrist with exceptional fluidity and comfort. It is highly practical, too, featuring a folding clasp with micro-adjustment and a quick-release interchangeable system to swap out looks on the fly.
Reading Time Through Geometry
Hautlence has always favored kinetic mechanical theater over traditional hands, and The Kubera Watch executes this brilliantly. The dial completely abandons classic, ornate decoration in favor of strict, purposeful geometry. It features a deep olive green lacquered surface, structured with a subtle relief that captures light in constantly shifting layers—ensuring the face of the watch is never static.

Rather than utilizing sweeping hands, time is indicated through a specialized jumping hours and peripheral minutes module. The hour appears instantly in a dedicated aperture—a sharp, decisive, and uncompromising jump. Meanwhile, the minutes are tracked by a vibrant turquoise cursor that glides silently along the periphery of the dial. It is a signature Hautlence gesture; a precise, continuous motion that traces the passage of time with ultimate clarity.
The Engine Behind the Exhibition
To power this mechanical performance, Hautlence utilized the self-winding B60 calibre. Developed in close collaboration with the renowned movement specialists at Agenhor, this jumping hours and peripheral minutes module is an absolute feat of micro-engineering.

Comprising 244 individual components and 28 jewels, the movement beats at a modern 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Hautlence has also enhanced the calibre with a paramagnetic hairspring to fend off the modern magnetic fields we encounter daily, while ensuring the watch delivers a highly robust minimum power reserve of 70 hours. Naturally, the finishing is top-tier, and the water resistance is a capable 5 ATM, ensuring this architectural marvel can handle the rigors of daily wear.

For CHF 35,600, HAUTLENCE The Kubera Watch offers an entirely new perspective on horology. It turns the wrist into an evolving architectural landscape, masterfully crafted for the collector who seeks more than mere timekeeping. It proves that true high-end watchmaking isn’t just about reading the time—it is about experiencing it.
